Historical Perspective
The Alabama Association for Developmental Education
(ALADE), founded on the campus of Alabama State University, Montgomery, Alabama during
Spring 1987, had its initial conference in September 1987 at Troy State University in
Troy, Alabama. Angela Roling, and her staff cordially hosted this first conference. Hunter
Boylan and John Roueche were speakers for this August occasion. The first committees were:
Membership - Nora Davenport Lawson, Chair Beverly Adams, Acquanetta Bracy,
Randy Cross, Bettye Gilmore, Sue Rudd and Mitchell Summerlin
Program Planning - Voncile Gibson, Chair, Louise Boyd, Alan Brown, Carolyn
Clark, Jane Hawk and Beryl Odom.
Legislative Liaison - Patricia Fritchie, and Kelly Reed, Co-Chairs, Jane Hawk,
John Jenkins Ivery, and Stan Middlebrooks
Publicity - Virda Lester, Chair, and Joan Barnwell
Newsletter - Joan Barnwell, Chair, Acquanetta Bracy, M.S.
Hollingsworth, Ice McKnight and Anna Wade
At that first Fall Conference, in Troy, ALADE boasted
a membership of 80 with 25 members attending NADE. Diane Vukovich, 1987 President-elect of
NADE, worked diligently in her efforts to bring ALADE into fruition. ALADE received its
charter at NADE's Conference in Orlando, Florida, on March 12, 1988.
