Evaluation Criteria and Nomination Process for Awards

The Kellogg Institute Scholarship

The Kellogg Institute is an intensive four week-long workshop on current topics and state-of-the-art strategies for efficient operation of developmental and learning assistance programs. ALADE provides a $300 stipend to assist in defraying expenses.

Criteria for evaluation:

· ALADE membership

· three or more years as an educator or administrator in a developmental education program

· current employment as an educator or administrator in a developmental education program

· anticipated impact of how participation in the Kellogg Institute will contribute to personal professional development and to the developmental education program in which the nominee is currently employed

· personal or institutional support to supplement cost of attending the Kellogg Institute

· support from supervisors, colleagues, and/or students

 

Directions for application:

· letter of application (limit of two pages) stating

o length of membership in ALADE,

o number of years experience in developmental education,

o how participation in the Kellogg Institute will contribute to personal professional development and to the developmental education program in which the nominee is currently employed

· letter of administrative financial support or other assurance of financial commitment for the nominee to attend the Kellogg Institute (limit of one page)

· two letters of support from supervisors, colleagues, and/or students (limit of one page per letter)

The ALADE Award to an Outstanding Alumnus of a Developmental Education Program

This award recognizes a graduate of a developmental education program who has distinguished him/herself in others areas of life.

Criteria for evaluation:

· completion of at least two developmental courses or participated in at least two of the following developmental program activities: TRIO Upward Bound, TRIO Student Support Services, high school-to-college bridge program, special admissions program, enrollment in developmental classes (e.g., math, writing, study skills, reading)

· outstanding accomplishments outside the classroom

 

Directions for application:

· letter of nomination including specific developmental classes taken and/or developmental programs in which the person participated and the individual’s out-of-class accomplishments (limit of two pages)

· one letter of endorsement from college faculty, including developmental faculty (limit of one page)

· nominee’s resume summary (limit of two pages)

· one letter of reference from current work supervisor and/or community leader (limit of one page).

The ALADE Award for Developmental Educator of the Year

 

This award recognizes long-term contribution of time and energy to developmental education students by an ALADE member

Criteria for evaluation:

· approximately half or more of his or her time serving developmental education students through teaching and/or administration for at least five or more years

· the nominee’s record of service

· recognition of the nominee’s service by others

 

Directions for application:

· letter of nomination summarizing contributions by the nominee to developmental education students (limit of two pages)

· letter of endorsement by institution employing the nominee (limit of one page)

· resume of the nominee (limit of five pages) including

o       length of service and diverse ways the nominee has served developmental education students

o       additional contributions that indirectly affect students, such as leading on-campus faculty development workshops, conference presentations, and articles in education journals and newsletters

o       a record of local, state, or national recognition by others of the nominee’s service to developmental education students

· two letters of support from individuals from any of the following groups: student(s), administrator(s), faculty member(s) teaching developmental education classes, colleague(s) outside the developmental education area (limit of one page per letter).

The ALADE Award for Outstanding Developmental Education Program

This award recognizes excellence in developmental education programs The winning program is invited to present a session at the following year’s ALADE conference to highlight its strategies used to promote excellence.

Criteria for evaluation:

· recognized program quality by peers and campus administrators

· quality service to students

· demonstrated effectiveness through achievement of objective criteria

Directions for application:

· letter of nomination summarizing strengths and achievements of the developmental education program (limit of two pages)

· letter of support provided by nominee’s campus administrator (limit of one page)

· description of the developmental education program (limit of two pages) including

o mission statement

o program components

o unique program features

o instructional delivery systems

o staffing

o program evaluation criteria (e.g., percent of student body served, number of students served through activities

o qualitative and/or quantitative research studies on program effectiveness regarding student outcomes)

o partnerships with other campus or off-campus departments and agencies

· supporting materials of the program such as campus promotional materials, newspaper/magazine articles describing the program, and/or awards received by the program (limit of two pages).

The TClifford Bibb Awards

 

These awards honor Dr. TClifford Bibb’s long, effective and loyal service. He was an early leader of ALADE and NADE and was instrumental in guiding individuals in furthering their education and in bringing diversity to ALADE. Other professional activities of Bibb include helping to organize the Alabama ALADE chapter, serving as the first president of ALADE and NADE President. Nominations for these awards are made by ALADE Executive Board members.

· length and diverse nature of service to ALADE

· recognition by peers of contribution to ALADE

· two letters of support from other ALADE members or national leaders (limit of one page each)

· resume of the nominee including years of service to ALADE, offices held, committee and task force participation, and awards received (limit of three pages)

· a small sample of articles written or supervised by the nominee (e.g., journals, newsletters, committee/task force reports) if available

The TClifford Bibb Award for Outstanding Contributions to ALADE

This award recognizes the special supporting role of non-members to the success of developmental education.

Criteria for evaluation:

· clear evidence of private and public support of developmental education

· long-term support for developmental education

Directions for application:

· letter of nomination from the Executive Board (limit of two pages)

· resume of the nominee including nominee’s professional affiliations that relate to developmental education (limit of three pages)

· two letters of support from the following groups: ALADE Executive Board, director/instructor in a developmental education program, developmental education student, community leader (limit of one page per letter)

· most recent newspaper articles, professional publications and/or formal public presentations supporting developmental education, if available

ALADE Award for outstanding research

 

This award honors recently completed research by a ALADE member. The winner is invited to present at the Association’s annual conference the year after he or she receives the award. Criteria for evaluation: (a) significance to the field of developmental education; (b) theoretical/research basis; and rationale for the study (c) theoretical basis and description of research methodology; (d) soundness of conclusions from research; (e) quality of written presentation. Directions for application: Prepare three (3) copies of the research abstract (limit of 5 double-spaced typewritten pages). Include a title page and list of references. Do not identify the author(s) or employing institution(s) in the abstract.
